In 2016, the residents of Tug Lake created an 18-person Tug Lake Task Force to study the harmful effects of blue-green algae within our lake. As Tug Lake riparians, we have experienced how bad harmful blue-green algae can get if left untreated. The soupy green mats we have had since 2016 have dramatically altered the way we are able to enjoy the lake, especially regarding the health and safety of aquatic and human life and the ecosystem of the lake.
After extensive research and resident deliberation, the Task Force has concluded that the establishment of a Lake District is the best way to ensure that we manage the lake ecosystem for the benefit of aquatic and human health, recreational activities, and property values. The creation of the proposed Lake District is necessary define the present and anticipated problems of Tug Lake, identify their causes, and implement various education and/or remedial measures to deal with the problems. Creation of the Tug Lake District allows the undertaking of activities such as: protection of the fishery; control of harmful blue green algae, aquatic weeds and/or invasive species; reduction and/or treatment of harmful sedimentation to abate internal nutrient cycling; and improvement of the health of the Tug Lake ecosystem.
Tug Lake is located in Lincoln County. Visitors have access to the lake from a public boat landing and a public beach. Tug Lake is a 151 acre lake with a maximum depth of 21 feet. Fish include Musky, Panfish, Largemouth Bass, Northern Pike and Walleye. The lake's water clarity is low.
